Question #6: How To Deal With Nervousness Prior To And During A Tournament?

Hi all,

Greg asks:

I am playing in a Swiss System weekend tournament in a few days, and I am concerned about the amount of anxiety I feel before and during competitive events like this. I love chess, but I often become so anxious that I am often unable to think clearly and to play as well as I can. In post mortem analysis, many times I cannot even recall why I played a certain move in a given position. Have you any suggestions to help me overcome this anxiety?

How To Lose In Chess #3: Small Mistakes Add Up…

[this post contains a video]

Hi all,

Welcome to yet another well succeeded video lecture if I may say so myself. In this video I discuss one of my losses from the viewpoint of the mistakes I made.

There is normally a technical and psychological side to these moments. When you make a number of them there is the risk that they start to add up.

Drill #1!

[this post contains a video]

Hi all,

I have the pleasure to announce you Drills! The reason for drills is at least fourfold:

  1. you can exercise the chess thinking skills that you learn here at Better Your Chess
  2. you can compare your own thinking and solution to a “correct” sample way of thinking
  3. you develop decent chess thinking as a part of your chess toolbox. This is also where the consistent and coherent nature of Better Your Chess plays an important role.
  4. Drills come with useful tips

Master The Mindset #4: Play With Confidence

[This post contains an audio file]

In a practical over the board game it is of great importance to play sufficiently quick and also to play with confidence. It pays off to have some knowledge of the opening of course so as to be able to play it with the wind in the sails and also have a feel for the more critcal phases of the game when you really need your time to think. At the same time you have the responsibility – playing white – to make a fist against the black position, and – playing black – to try and equalize, while having some positive imbalance of your own to build on.
