[video] Chess News #31: Anand – Ivanchuk, Bilbao 2008

Yesterday was the first round of the new Grand Slam Chess Final. it is being held in Bilbao, Spain. Magnus Carlsen got of to a great start as he defeated Levon Aronian with black. It reminded me of the candidates matches they played in Elista earlier. There Carlsen put up a tremendous fight to constantly get back into the match.

It could have been quite a vote yesterday, for playing with the black pieces, had Ivanchuk seized his opportunity to capitalize on a promising position against Anand. It is this game that I am taking a look at in the video:

[video] Chess News #7: Ivanchuk beats Cheparinov and wins M-Tel Masters Chess Tournament

Ivanchuk has won the M-Tel masters Chess Tournament in Sofia Bulgaria, 2008 with the fantastic score of 8 out of 10.
Whilst winning all of his five games during the first leg of the tournament, Ivanchuk was on the defensive in the second leg but he never cracked and remained undefeated.
In the tenth and final round he beat Topalov’s second Cheparinov in a typical Sicilian middlegame.
Check out the video to see how!

[video] Chess News #2-5: The Amazing Mr. Ivanchuk!

As we speak it is the rest day of the M-tel Masters Chess Tournament in Sofia Bulgaria. What happened thus far in the first half of the tournament is quite amazing: Vassily Ivanchuk scored an incredible 5 out of 5! His TPR sofar is an unprecedented 3537! In an earlier post you could see how Ivanchuk beat Radjabov, today I publish 4 videos with fragments of his other wins. Although Ivanchuk has not been completely without luck, Radjabov pushed to hard in the middlegame, the game against Topalov was going back and forth and Xianghi blundered on move 7, I still think it is quite an achievement. Especially his games against Cheparinov and Aronian were impressive. Enjoy!

[video] Chess News #1: My First Post!

Hello and welcome to my first post! Let’s hope it will not be my “Last Post”, this is when they do the trumpet-thing in Ieper and Kortrijk, Belgium to commemorate the casualties of the First World War.

Anyways, today was the first round of the M-tel masters in Sofia Bulgaria. It was a bloody day since all three games were decided. Topalov beat Aronian with the black pieces, Ivanchuk did the same against Radjabov and Cheparinov beat Xiangzhi from China. The players are playing in an almost sound proof glass booth and sit on Louis Seize style chairs, it is a funny sight. Let’s have a look at the end of the game Radjabov – Ivanchuk:
